I think it should work as long as you can transform it to a Terrain Matrix file (.bin/.txt), you can also use GeoTif etc.
The problem with high resolution matrix is that the files get really big very quickly (exponentially) and it will impact the performance of the game. If you choose a small scenery-area it might work. Give it a try.
I usually use 1arc.sec. resolution geodata and that works very well for the most part, higher resolution and I see the landscape constantly reloading on a short distance.
