Connecting Virtual Sailor NG to another program

Hello all,

My name is Javi and I am new around here.

I hear that sadly the developer of this awesome simulator passed away earlier this year. I was wondering if someone has tried to connect this simulator to another program, maybe using a port or similar. What I want to do is coding a program that obtains the info from the sensors and computes a rudder and propeller input, and inject it back to the simulator. Do you think thats possible? Have someone tried something similar? I guess that if online gaming it's possible, it should be possible to use the port that the simulator is using.

There is NMEA support from the sim, perhaps that will do it? I have written an app which connects to the NMEA source and outputs my vessel position, much more basic than you are talking, but might be a starting point to look at?
