Yes correct, if you want to recreate correct positions you should use the objects.txt If you have known reference position for a building, let us assume a 3D model of a building with its origin (where the x,y,z axis meet) at the Southeast corner you can check the position in a map and write it right...

I think it should work as long as you can transform it to a Terrain Matrix file (.bin/.txt), you can also use GeoTif etc. The problem with high resolution matrix is that the files get really big very quickly (exponentially) and it will impact the performance of the game. Have you updated to the latest version? This should work now! You should get a seperate vector in openCPN now showing the motion indepentent from the ships HDG.
regarding sceneries I work on a few different projects whith correct positions for ports and beacons... works perfect together with openCPN.

you might want to check out this website.

You can activate the different animations the vessel might have. Like Bowvisor on ferries. etc.
